She is the definition of accident prone! No seriously! Look!
accident-prone
adj
more liable than most people to be involved in accidents
That is most definitely her!
Leah even started off accident prone. She has been the only one of my babies to be admitted to the special care nursery. {A less intense NICU.} She had complications at birth from a pneumothorax, which is basically a collapsed lunge. I should have known from there that we'd be in for it.
Even as an immobile infant, she would still obtain freak accident wounds. Something would fall on her, Joshua or Hailey would trip and fall on her, and if I remember correctly I'm pretty sure she was stepped on at one point.
The first "big" accident was Christmas Eve of 2009. Her older brother accidentally smashed her little finger in his bedroom door resulting in surgery. This was followed by a broken leg in February of 2010. November she fell, and her poor face caught her fall leaving her with a CT scan. She ended up being fine! {Other than a sinus infection they caught on the CT scan.}
This time frame, of course, was speckled with smaller injuries. Skinned knees, bruised shins, goose eggs, and one of the worse minor injuries was when she fell out of the car and landed face first in our gravel driveway. No x-rays, or CT's, just busted lips, bruised head, and skinned face. True, skinned knees and bruises are the norm for kids. Joshua and Hailey have acquired quite their own collection. It's just that Leah seems to get them at least 4X more than they ever did!
We spent this morning in the ER to find out that she most likely has a broken nose. They didn't want to do a CT scan, because she wasn't showing any signs of a brain injury, and they didn't want to expose her to the radiation if it could be avoided. They also said there's not much that can be done for a broken nose, and if anything, it would have to be checked once all of the swelling went down. We will be scheduling a follow-up with an ear, nose, and throat specialist and hope for the best between now and then.
While sitting in the ER, the whole thing felt so routine to me, that I wasn't even scared! When I realized that I wasn't feeling the normal worrisome horror I used to feel with each injury, I realized I was growing immune to it! And as I watched Leah walking around, playing, smiling, and laughing I realized that she too seems to have grown immune to her injuries as well.
I don't know what 2011 holds for us, but I honestly hope is as injury-less as possible!
