♪♫"Don't call it a comeback, I been here for years!! Rockin my peers and puttin suckas in fear!"♫♪
In case you can't tell, that's a rapping cloth diaper.
Disposables were introduced sometime around the mid 1930's, but really didn't blow up until the 70's. But cloth diapers didn't go anywhere. They just flip-flopped roles with disposables, accounting for 1-5% of the diaper market. When my first two children were born, I didn't even know cloth diapers were still in existence. {Other than to be used as burp clothes.} Diaper pins had other uses, and plastic pants were for potty training purposes, not diapering. {Or so I thought.} I didn't know people still actually used them to diaper their babies.
I didn't know that there was a cloth diapering world out there until I became pregnant with Leah. To be honest, I'm not sure where I read/heard about cloth diapers making "come back". I'm not sure how I even knew about them...but I knew I was really intrigued, and really wanted to go that route with Leah. {A friend of my sisters used clothe, and I believe she may have been behind my inspiration. But honestly, I really don't know.}
Of course we know how that story ends, my idea was shot down, and I gave up without a fight.
Then I entered the blogging world. I started seeing more and more fluffy butts. These blogging moms weren't blogging about cloth diapering, but here they were posting pictures of their little one's in adorable fluffy prints and colors. People, a lot more people than I had ever imagined, were actually USING cloth diapers! They weren't buying stashes, and calling it quits. They weren't complaining of stinky houses, and millions of loads of laundry. But to be honest, if they had those complaints, I would never know it, because for some reason cloth diapering was never discussed.
Now I kind of know why.
People are so judgmental and critical of cloth diapering mama's!! I was shocked at feedback i was seeing on forums, and so surprised at the personal feedback I was receiving from family members when I talked about cloth diapering.
Anyway, my scrambled brain is throwing me off course with this post, and has me off the topic, which IS my friends, that cloth diapers never went anywhere! They've just been reinvented. In a world where "eco-friendly" is the way to go, and in an economy where people are having a hard time rubbing two nickles together, I can't think of a more appropriate time for CD's to reemerge.
To be honest, I don't understand how in this economy I see lower income families using WIC to pay for formula and charity's to provide disposables for their babies. It baffles my mind. You would think that there would be classes encouraging breast feeding and cloth diapering, incentives , tax breaks, or allowances, that would not only save our families money, but help in the ever expanding deficit that is our countries debt.
Anyhow, those are just my two cents.
