I thought my Funk Rock was a gift from the heavens. When Grayson pee'd and I didn't smell anything I was SO INCREDIBLY RELIEVED. After weeks of different soaks, strips, and every laundry routine you can imagine something FINALLY worked. It worked so well in fact, I decided to switch from my beloved Crunchy Clean to Rockin' Green all together. I only had samples, but I had enough for several washes, and figured I would order more when I ran out.
I'm glad I didn't order more.
I turned my head for a second, and there it was. Stabbing me. The ammonia.
After the first wash cycle and pee the diapers were GRAVY. Completely stink free. {Other than the normal pee smell.} The second cycle? Very faint, almost wondering if I'm imagining it smell. The third? Faint, but not imagining, definitely there. Fourth? BURNY HOT AMMONIA.
I could have cried.
Again, I hit the google search bar. Determined to find a solution. I was NOT ready to give up on the cloth diapers I loved so dearly! Something HAD to work, and not just for a few days, but FOREVER.
That's when I came acrooss DiaperSwappers.com. Through Diaper Swappers, I came across a thread. THIS thread: "The No Stink, No Complications Laundry Solution!". I felt a mix of emotions. Doubt, disbelief, I thought it was too good to be true! Then I felt...liberated. What if it was true?! What if it really was that simple? It made sense! I made COMPLETE sense. I read through all 32 pages of the thread. I couldn't stop reading, and hoping! While reading through the comments I came across another link, Rumparooz care instructions for their diapers. It was basically what was talked about the thread. It helped me make my final decision and I went the next morning on a hunt for new detergent.
I started at Big Lots in hopes of finding Original Tide HE Powder, non-Ultra. I didn't have luck. They did have an Arm & Hammer that was "Clean Rinsing" that I remembered seeing on a "CD Safe" chart, and also All Free & Clear Small & Mighty that was also on a "CD Safe" chart so I picked those up. I was so excited for them to work. They didn't. Luckily they were cheap! The next day, I tried again, and went to a different Big Lots location. I was SO FREAKING EXCITED when I found the box of Original NON-ULTRA Tide! But was so bummed when I saw it wasn't HE.
Finally I said screw it, and did just what the thread said to do. I bought liquid Original Tide HE. I didn't do any soaks, or stripping, I figured my dipes had had enough. I just washed. But instead of using a tablespoon of cloth diaper safe detergent, I used the Tide. It was a really big load so I poured the detergent up to line 1. I washed the diapers like I did before, and made sure to rinse really well. They TOTALLY smelled like Tide afterwards, but it was actually kind of nice!
The big test was having G pee in them of course. At first, the ammonia was still there. I could definitely tell an improvement, but it was still there. I didn't give up. I figured, the problem didn't happen overnight, it won't fix itself overnight. The next wash I could definitely tell the ammonia was going away. We're in the 3rd or 4th week now, and the diapers smell cleaner then ever! They are bright white, soft as can be, and completely stink free. Now when he pees? I smell pee and Tide. No ammonia, no funk, no stink. I will take the smell of Tide over ammonia ANY day.
I'm really hesitant to say the issues are gone forever. But I can say with confidence that I am a true convert and believer. Tide, just like on clothes, is the SHIZ for cloth diapers.
I've noticed when I try to share my experience with others that they're reluctant the way I was. I don't think I have converted anyone yet. But I have a feeling they may just end up where I was. And then, like me, they'll cave, feel guilty, then liberated, and never look back.
