When Hailey told me she was reading "The Baby Sitters Club" I practically jumped with joy! I read every single book in that series when I was her age. I LOVED that series. Having her read something I enjoyed so much as a child felt freaking AWESOME.
I've gotta say though, that was I was pretty shocked when she proudly brought home the book to share with me and found that it wasn't exactly the same book I read 20 years ago. It actually wasn't a book at all, but a graphic novel.
All I could say was, "WHAT THE WHAT?!".
How can you replace The mother fracking BABY SITTERS CLUB with a graphic novel? So, incredibly, on the opposite end of the spectrum. Just saying.
Okay, okay, once I got over my initial shock, disappointment, and grief, I saw the that there was indeed at least a little bit of a coolness factor.
Exhibit A: Hailey is an AMAZINGLY animated reader. She can read a book out loud better than anyone I've ever heard. She gives LeVar Burton a run for his money. While she's incredibly smart and reading above grade level, she's not quite as ahead as I was at her age and I think she would really struggle with the series I grew up with. After all she only JUST began reading chapter books. The graphic novel is that, graphics, so it's a lot easier to read and enjoy for a youngster.
Exhibit B:. Okay, there's not an exhibit B, I got nothing after exhibit A. But I will say that I'm super stoked that she's interested, and I will be hunting down the original series. It will make a great gift for her 8th or 9th birthday and until then? I'm going to be looking for Baby Sitters Little Sister. The series that brought me to TBCS.
Okay, rant over. But seriously? Some things need to be left alone.
