I thought my battle with ammonia was treacherous. That was nothing compared to the war I'm fighting with yeast.
It started a little over a month ago. I went to change Grayson and noticed a rash. It was small, and he'd had a rash before, I did what I always do, threw on some CJ's Butter and put on a fresh diaper. That's all it took usually. It didn't work though. Over the course of the day the rash didn't budge. Within a few days it was worse, and spreading. Finally it got to the point where it was inevitable, something major had to be done.
My first attempt was with Lotrimin and fleece liners. I went through an entire tube of that stuff before I gave up. I wanted to try an option where Grayson could stay in cloth, without using liners, something that would cure the rash from him AND his diapers, so I ordered a product made by CJ's that was formulated for yeast. It didn't work. So I added tea tree oil and washed all of G's dipes in the tea tree oil hoping to disinfect them.
Nada.
After about a week, I gave up on the "staying in cloth" approach and bought disposable. We were traveling for Thanksgiving anyhow so the disposables didn't seem an ENTIRE waste of money. Over the long Thanksgiving weekend the rash would begin to get better, then get worse again before it improved, but then would go back downhill. By the time we were home I made one last feeble attempt with the Lotrimin, but went ahead an made an appointment for Grayson to be seen by his doctor.
After a long list of changes needed to be made, for eczema and sensitivity, we were given a prescription of Nystatin and told it could take up to a month or more for the infection to be cleared! We had to buy more disposables, which I HATED, but within a few days, the rash FINALLY cleared up! I knew we would have to continue the Nystatin even after it cleared for several days, but he only needed it twice a day so I was excited to stop using disposables when he wasn't using the medicine!
My excitement didn't last, as soon as I took the first cloth diaper off of him the rash was back.
I wanted to scream even more than I did when I used to smell that dastardly ammonia. Ammonia smelled bad, but this? This was HURTING MY BABY.
I did another attempt at disinfecting the cloth, and continued with the Nystatin. After I felt the diapers were good to go I timidly tried again. Again, the rash was back as SOON as he was back in cloth.
A week and a half in, we unknowingly ran out of disposables and were left HAVING to use cloth until we could make it to the store. I was hopeful, but my hopes were bashed. Again, the moment he was in cloth, the rash was back.
We're 6.5 weeks in with the rash now, 2 weeks and 1 day since beginning the Nystatin. Today I'm going at the diapers with all guns blazing. I'm talking stripping, soaking, bleaching, and tea tree oil. I'm PRAYING it works. Grayson's well child check is today so I'm hoping to gain some insight and advice from the doc.
Wish me luck! I will continue sharing my experience as well as the entire wash routine I attempt today.
If you have ANY words of wisdom, please share!
