Umm....what?

Me: What is lent?

Hubby: It's something Catholics do.

Me: But I'm a Christian and I don't know what it is.

Me: A bunch of people are giving stuff up for lent, like facebook and stuff.

Me: Is it where you're not supposed to eat fish on Fridays?

Hubby: No, you're not supposed to eath meat. And it's supposed to be the whole time, not just Fridays. You're actually supposed to fast.

Me: But this is the 20th century, so people are like "Whatever, I'll just give up Facebook...."

Hubby: Yea.

Me: Is it the 20th century?

Hubby: No it's the 21st.

Me: How long is lent?

Hubby: It's supposed to be a while before Easter. It ends Easter.

So, what is Lent? And why don't I already know what it is?! I was raised in (mostly Baptist) church, but I had never even heard of it until meeting the hubster, who was raised catholic. But now everyone is posting all these things about lent. I just want to know what it is. Can someone, anyone, fill me in?

{PS} I love Jesus, a lot, so I hope he's not offended about me not knowing what lent is.

I grew up Baptist too and we never practiced Lent to my knowledge. But it certainly isn't strictly a Catholic thing. Plenty of protestants pratice it as well. This is my first year and though I am giving up soda, that isn't my focus. Traditionally, it's about fasting and prayer in preparation for Easter. But my focus is about adding more Jesus to my life. There are things that need to be removed that prevent me in my relationship to him, but that certianly isn't a food or a drink. It's behavior more than anything. I'm doing a great devotional for these 40 days that allow you to accompany (through the Scriptures) Jesus on His journey to the cross. His experiences, pain and prayers leading up to the cruxifiction give me a clearer understanding of what it meant for Him to die on that cross. And how desperately in need of a Savior I am. Check out my post on Lent...http://www.sustainingcreativity.com/2010/02/lent.html
Hope this helps!
